A breast lift is a surgical procedure that lifts the breasts, minimizing sagging caused by age, the effects of gravity, and pregnancy and/or childbirth. Also known as mastopexy, this cosmetic surgery procedure elevates the breasts to make them look more youthful and enhances suppleness (but not volume). It is often performed simultaneously with breast augmentation surgery. The procedure may also re-align the nipples/ areolas so that they are located in a more desirable position.
General Breast lift Surgery
The breast lift procedure takes place on an outpatient basis. The patient is placed under anesthesia. The most common mastopexy procedure involves placing an anchor-like incision along the underside of each breast. This incision, located around the unwanted skin and tissue, defines the new position of the areola and nipple. The unwanted tissue is removed, allowing for the areola and nipple to be relocated to a higher position on the breast as well as the breast to be reshaped desirably.
Women with smaller breasts or minimal sagging may have a less invasive procedure, known as “doughnut” or “concentric” mastopexy. Circular incisions are made around the areola in this type of procedure, allowing for the removal of excess tissue.
Regardless of the technique applied during your surgery, modern mastopexy innovations minimize the side effect of reduced nipple sensation and achieve safe and pleasing results.
Recovery Following Breast Lift Surgery
A complete list of post-operative instructions will be given to you. Follow them closely to help your body recovery quickly and properly. You’ll most likely require plenty of rest and limit your movement. Dressings, applied immediately following surgery, will help the recovery process. You may also need to wear a surgical bra to maintain support. Any discomfort experienced following surgery can be minimized with prescribed oral medication. Complications are rare, and can be minimized by following post-operative care instructions carefully.
Please note that breast lift surgery cannot augment the size of the breasts. The procedure only corrects sagging and drooping.
